Stay

Have the puppy sit. Say "Stay" and back one or two steps away from the puppy.  Give him the reward and praise him for staying - assuming he does. If he moves, just start again.  Reward him when he's still sitting, not after he gets up, so that he associates the reward with staying and not with the release. As he learns to respond repeatedly, you can withhold the reward for progressively longer periods to get him to understand he needs to stay in that position.

Down

Again, show the puppy the reward to get his attention. Say "Down", and slowly lower the reward to the floor.  If needed, help him down with very slight pressure on his shoulders. (Don't put pressure on his back, or you could hurt him.) As soon as he lies down, even for a few seconds, give him the reward and praise him profusely. Again, as he responds regularly, you can extend the period before giving the reward.

Stand

With the puppy in the "Down" position, say "Stand" and raise the treat forward and up in front of him. Help him into position if necessary. Once he stands for a moment, praise and reward him. As with the other exercises, gradually extend the time he has to stand to earn the reward.

Heel

Show the puppy his reward (use food for this one) at about his head level on your left-hand side. Say "Heel" and walk forward.  Let the puppy eat some of the treat as you walk. Go only a few steps at first, then a gradually a little further. As always, praise him when he gets it right.  As the puppy learns what is expected of him, lift the treat a little higher, but do not reward him if he jumps up.

Come

When teaching your puppy to come to you, call him at different times throughout the day, even if you don't want him for any particular reason.  Every time he comes, praise and reward him.

An alternative is to use two people and have the other person hold the puppy while you walk away, then call his name, followed by "Come" as the other person releases him. Give him the reward as soon as he gets to you.

As with all training, the key is to be consistent in your commands, friendly at all times and always to reward the correct behavior, never to punish for the wrong response.

It's a bad joke that I used to say if ever I was doing one of my leash walking seminars. I used to do seminars on the leash walking and I always said this bad joke because of an incident that happened shortly after that I've opened my dog training company weekend.

You see, a Saturday afternoon I was finish day of education classes when a very nice lady came into my Office. It seemed that she was in a Rocky film. She had two huge black eyes, a piece of tape on his nose and his face was red and puffy.

I discovered that his face was puffiness from crying, she began to cry as soon as she walked in the door. She then told the story of his laboratory of large 90 lb of black that has been the cause of his injuries and his crying.

She then explained that she was about to take his dog to walk, something absolutely feared because it was such a horrible reel. He would drag around a 30 minutes and to take a market has been terrible.

She added that the other day, it was preparing to take him a walk. Just as she was about to leave the House of her husband called him. She stopped just as she walked through the door. His laboratory outside the House and she was still inside the House.

She was standing in the House holding the leash of his dog as he was outside, her dog saw a cat. His laboratory has seen the cat took off after it full speed. She had the loop of the leash around his wrist.

With the speed of a boat pulling a skier out of the water she was face first in the door, breaking his nose and injuring his wrist.

It was then that she started crying - she said that she loved his dog. It was soft, never chewed, never had any problems housetraining but she could not control him on the leash. He was everywhere and it became impossible to walk anywhere.
I assured him that she was in the right place and that we would get his dog walking on a leash in a short time. A few days later, she showed with his happy, excitable, strong laboratory and we started our training leash. I explained to him that the best place to begin training is to understand why dogs are certain behaviours.

When it comes to there are three reasons why the dogs pull. Once you understand what are the reasons that you can take steps to correct the problem. They are as follows:

Reason # 1: Your dog has no idea that they are supposed to walk next to you.

Reason # 2: Reflex of Opposition.

Reason # 3: Your dog is constantly rewarded for.

Therefore see the first reason why the dogs pull - your dog has no indication that it is supposed to walk at your side. When you put your dog on a leash your dog does not know he is supposed to walk politely by your side. Your dog sees a large world before him and starts to pull.

The second reason has to do with the reflex of the Opposition. When you apply pressure to your dog apply backpressure. Ever notice that you pull on the leash over your dog takes.

The third reason why your dog takes is simple. Your dog is constantly rewarded for. If your dog sees a fire hydrant, that he wants to study and you removed all the way it, your just dog was rewarded for traction. Not intentional on your part, but still winning.

Once you understand why your dog tire you can take steps to teach your dog to walk on a leash. I always taught that trick of walking a dog on a leash is to ensure that he does y no tension in the leaves.

Why You Must Train Your Dog - A Crucial Part Of Dog Ownership

If your dog usually misbehaves it may be extremely humiliating. But if he does misbehave you will be concerned that he may hurt someone or even injure himself whenever you take him out in the community. The Most Commonly Used Dog Training Hand Signals

There are no universally accepted dog training hand signals but there many generally accepted. Some signals do have slight variations. As an owner consistency is the order of the day, decide on a simple hand signal and stick with it. Any signal you give should be at the height of the dog this makes it easier for your dog to see and therefore carry out the signal.
Basic commands will already be familiar to your dog as most of the early training will have been done with the use of food treats.

When training your dog all spoken commands should be used alongside hand signals. One type of signal will support and compliment the other. Hand signals come into their own when you are training your dog at a distance over which your voice may not carry. All the frequently used commands can have had signals to accompany them and you should always use them together.

Firstly the sit command. With the dog in front of you, you move a treat held in your hand in a sweeping manner from level with your dog's nose upwards. You want your dog to follow the treat and lift its head thus dropping its bottom on to the ground and sitting. You hand should finish next to your head. You will probably make the movement slow enough to allow your dog to follow the treat and say the command sit. Repeat this several times and your dog will begin to associate the verbal and hand signal to mean the same thing. The next stage is to increase the distance between yourself and your dog. When your dog is responding to the command start to fade out the verbal command and use just the hand signal. If the dog gets confused reintroduce the verbal instruction again.

The down command hand signal is a flat palm pointing toward the ground and moving downwards to the ground. Your signal starts at the dog's height and goes downwards. This should be approached in the same way as the sit by standing a couple of stride in front of your dog, using both the verbal and hand signal command. Increase the distance and then fade out the verbal command. A slight variation of this signal is to point to the ground and then move your finger downwards. All these movements are done at the side of your body, this makes it easier for your dog to see and follow the hand signal.

The stand hand signal starts with your dog at your side, a flat palm in front of the dog's nose with the verbal command stand stay. At first keep your hand in place but gradually you should be able to give the command and move your hand away. Once your dog is familiar with the stand at your side you can change to standing in front of your dog and use the same flat palm in front of the dog's nose along side the stand stay command. Gradually increase the distance between you and your dog and then fade out the verbal command. Again the signal is given at the side of your body and the height of the dog.

Go right and go left can be introduced to move your dog in those directions. Again quite close at first, using a post to be the destination. Treat when the dog goes in the correct direction and eventually sits or downs at the post. The hand signal is pointing in the direction you want the dog to move.

It is that simple. You just need lots of practice and patience and eventually you will have your dog, sitting, standing and downing in quick succession without a word being spoken.

Dog Behavior Training - Dog Aggression Toward Its Owners

A dog that growls at and/or bites its owner does so for some reason, even if the behavior appears to be "unreasonable" to the owner. If your dog displays aggressive behavior towards you, for the safety and welfare of you, your family and your dog, it's important to find out why as quickly as possible.

Call your vet right away and schedule an appointment for a complete medical examination. Talk with your vet about testing your dogs hormonal balance, neurophysiologic functions and allergies. The test results may reveal the underlying cause. This has been especially helpful in dogs that have mood swings.

When growling or biting has erupted as a consequence of scolding or punishment for behavior such as chewing, jumping, general unruliness, or overprotection of food, these problems must be dealt with swiftly and firmly to correct the aggression it is initiating.

As the dogs owner, you must understand that your dog growls or bites at you as a result of defensive feelings. Even the dog that growls when ordered off the couch is reacting defensively, as it feels its dominance status has been threatened.

If scolding and punishment provoke aggression, your dog is reacting to a perceived threat to its physical safety. In either of these situations, your own threatening behavior may be producing negative results.

If the results of a medical examination show no signs of a medical condition that would be causing this behavior, you will have to examine your own behavior closely to determine what you are doing to make your dog feel threatened.

Dog Training Tips - Teaching Your Dog to Sit

Many people's experience with dog training can be described like this; when their dog is six months to a year old, they sign up for a dog obedience class; some make it through the six or eight week course and some do not; but for many, that is the end of their dog's education, and they describe their pet as "an obedience school dropout."

To these people, I say, "Let's be honest." The dog didn't drop out. You did. After all, who didn't drive to the class or decided to skip the session?"

The Problem with Obedience School

But in fairness to dropouts, let's also admit that a dog obedience class can be a frustrating experience for both dog and owner if this class is the dog's first experience with training. Obedience classes traditionally begin with the heel command, which is actually one of the more complex things you can ask a dog to understand. It's like expecting a child to learn algebra when they haven't had basic arithmetic.

When you give a dog the heel command, what you're asking him/her to do is not one specific thing. What your dog is supposed to do depends entirely on what you're doing. Should your dog walk when you walk, turn when you turn, and stop when you stop. Add to that the fact that, if this is the first training experience, your poor dog doesn't even understand that training is what is going on. The dog is not a bad dog, and is not a stupid dog, but he/she not only doesn't know what you're asking it to do, your dog also probably doesn't even understand that you're asking it to do something.

An Easier Way

It doesn't have to be this way. There is a simpler way to train your dog, so relaxed that you can begin training your puppy the day you bring her home.

The "sit" command is the most universally useful command you can teach your dog. The new dog owner might wonder why. "How is this useful? The dog is not doing anything!"

Exactly! A dog that is sitting is not jumping all over your grandmother, or whatever other obnoxious behavior you want it to stop doing. And more importantly, a dog that is sitting when told is a dog that is under control and doing what you want.

The traditional method of teaching the sit command is to have the dog on leash at your side, repeat the command "Sit" while you pull up on the leash and push down on her butt. You're forcing the dog into the correct position, but this is not enjoyable and can be stressful and frustrating for both you and the dog.

But why force the dog into position when you can coax? Start with a treat, something yummy like dried liver, or even a piece of kibble if he/she hasn't been fed yet. Call the dog, get his/her attention, and make sure your dog knows you have a treat.

It won't take long. Within seconds your dog will be there, his/her nose right at your fingertips. From this position, all you have to do is move the treat back over his/her nose and the top of it's head.

Keep your hand only an inch or two over the dog's head; too high and she'll rear up on her hind legs. But, with the treat moving right back over her head, the nose will follow it, up and back... until... he/she... SITS!

Say good doggie, and reward him/her with a treat.

Do this a number of times every day. When you feed your dog, he/she will probably be jumping and frisking when your dog sees you coming with the food bowl. Tell your dog to sit, and when your dog sits, tell him/her is a good dog and set down the bowl.

You don't need to give the dog a treat now every time you tell him/her to sit. But do give your dog a praise! Your dog is doing what you asked it to do, acknowledge that, let your dog know how pleased you are, and what a good dog he/she is.

These exercises are not just useful in themselves, your dog is also learning to learn. Your dog is learning that sometimes you want it to do something, that there is a word associated with the thing you want her to do, and that if he/she pays attention, he/she can figure it out.

Above all, never consider that you're "done" training your dog. There's always something new to learn, and new ways for you and your dog to have fun together.

Dog Training - How To Teach Your Dog To Fetch

I was on my first lesson with a nice couple that had just adopted a three year old Golden Retriever. We went out in the backyard to do some obedience training and exercise with their dog. At one point, the wife picked up a tennis ball, got the dog excited and threw the ball. The Golden looked at the ball, looked at the wife and didn't budge an inch toward the ball.

The wife, looking at her dog, looked at the ball and went to get the ball. When she got back I told her that it was all backwards, that when she throws the ball the dog is supposed to retrieve the ball. We both had a good laugh and started to teach her dog to fetch.

Teaching your dog to fetch is a wonderful activity. A dog that retrieves tends to get more exercise than a dog that doesn't. With a retriever, it's easy for you to just stand in one spot and throw a ball for your dog. A lot of dogs like to chase after the ball and bring it towards the owner. When the dog gets close enough, he/she starts to play keep away. You can get your dog to give you the ball by having two tennis balls with you.

Throw the first ball and let your dog go after it. When your dog starts to come towards you, ask your dog to "drop it." If your dog does not drop the ball, stop paying any attention to your dog and take out the second ball.

Start to have fun with the second ball. Toss it up in the air. Act like you're having a great time with the second ball. Keep doing this until your dog looks at you. If you've done this step correctly, your dog will drop the ball that he/she has and look up at the one you have.

As soon as your dog drops his/her ball, show the ball you're holding to your dog. As soon as your dog focuses on the ball that you're holding, throw it. Repeat the process when your dog comes back to you. Within a short period of time, you'll have your dog retrieving for you.

Dogs love chase games. When they have a ball in their mouth and you attempt to take it away from your dog, your dog will play keep away with the ball. You need to outsmart your dog by using the second ball.
