Dog Training - Promoting Dog Health Through Fun Exercises

Your dog requires exercise to keep it fit. Exercise not only helps your dog keep physically fit, it is also an essential component of the mental health of any dog. Thus, you must make sure that your dog gets adequate exercise each day. A walk is the simplest and easiest way in which you can exercise your dog.

However, some owners may not get the time to do this on a regular basis and this can also get a little boring for both you, the owner, and your dog. Therefore there are other things you can try and experiment with, which can be fun, while giving the much needed exercise to your pet.

If you are hard pressed for time, you can consider getting a treadmill for your dog, which is specially designed for quadrupeds. This can take less time for your pet to exercise and it can be a welcome break from regular walking. However, remember to take your dog out for a walk whenever possible, and in between, use the treadmill as a substitute.

When you put your dog on the treadmill remember never to lose sight of your pet during exercise, because the safety of your dog should be your top priority. Never leave your dog alone or unattended on the treadmill.

At times, remember to take your dog out of the regular walking regime and route. This will be a welcome break for your dog as it can look around and 'socialize' with other animals. Also, it will mentally help your dog grow, as change is always good while regular schedules and timetables can make your dog become lethargic when overdone.

Explore new spots in the neighborhood and see what your dog likes. While on a walk, do not make it monotonous - include a few games like fetching, sitting, patting, gentle massaging, etc. Simply, the dog should not feel it is out on a walk with a robot!

Play with the dog also forms an important part of exercise in the daily life of your dog. Play is also extremely essential for the mental health of the dog, without which it can become bored, lethargic and sometimes aggressive. Therefore make it a point to play with your dog often, teach it a few tricks and repeat those tricks at times, so that both you and your dog can enjoy the show.

You can also show off the tricks your dog has learned in front of friends, which makes owners feel proud of their dog, and dogs are generally happy when they feel they have pleased their owners.

Remember to make these exercises fun. See which ones your dog likes the most. For example, your dog may simply love to play with a ball or he may love the play 'fetch'. Most dogs have their own favorites, which are variations of these preliminary games. It is best to understand what your dog likes and play accordingly.

Additionally, there are other fun exercises you can try out. For example, you can make your dog jump over anything - a rope, a carton, a box or anything else that comes to mind. This is fun and helps build the leg muscles of your dog. You can lay out beams on which you can ask your dog to walk, which is a challenge and improves the eye-muscle coordination of your dog. You can also train your dog to jump through a hoop like a circus act, and this can be a fun exercise to teach your dog to do as well.

Remember that your dog needs good exercise and fun exercise to remain physically and mentally fit.
