Is Puppy Training Important?

All dog owners will know that it takes a lot of hard work to train their pet dog, especially if training did not start from puppy stage. Thus, if you wondering is puppy training important, I can tell you very frankly that the answer is a resounding 'YES'! If you have just brought a puppy home, then it is high time you think about getting it trained before it starts picking up some bad habits and by that time, it will be even more difficult to train it.

Now that you know that puppy training is important, let's identify some training problems which you might encounter during your training. This will help you to be better prepared.

1. Potty Training Problems
If you have little kids at home, you will know that potty training a toddler is not an easy task. Similarly for puppies, you will need to have lots of patience when you are carrying out potty training for your new puppy. Be prepared that your puppy is not going to learn the skill overnight but it really depends on the breed of your puppy and how much help you managed to get. I spent 5 months toilet training my first puppy but for my second one, I took less than 1 month because I read up books written by the experts on the best methods to carry out such trainings.

Therefore, the best advice I can give you is to learn from the experts who can tell you exactly what to do when you are potty training your puppy. Do not try to reinvent the wheel because you will only end up taking a much longer route!

2. Barking Problems
It is impossible to train your puppy not to bark at all. That will be the same as asking a perfectly normal person to never talk! However, it is understandable that you will not want it to bark at nothing in particular. You might also not want it to start barking each time your doorbell rings or whenever someone walks past your house. Everybody's tolerance level is different so you have to consider that first when you are carrying out puppy training for your puppy in order to help it understand what is acceptable by you and what is not.

3. Leash Issues
I'm sure you know that all dogs love to go for walks but if you do not train your puppy not to pull at the leash right from the start, you will have much difficulty each time you try to take your puppy out. The problem will only worsen if you have a bigger breed of dog as your small manageable puppy will grow into a 75 pound adult dog! You will only end up with a dislocated arm when you try taking a gigantic dog for walks as without proper training it will pull you along at top speed while zigzagging from tree to tree!

4. Digging Problems
If you have a backyard which your puppy has easy access to, chances are it is likely to dig holes in it. Digging could be done out of boredom or that it wanted to reach the cool ground in order to lay on it. Whatever it is, that can be frustrating especially if your puppy chooses to dig holes in the middle of your beautiful flower garden or neatly trimmed lawn! If that happens, you can choose to lock your puppy out of your backyard or garden or include in your puppy training program that digging is allowed only in designated areas.

5. Chewing Issues
Most puppies love to chew on anything that they can find in the house. This is especially so when they are teething. This can be frustrating for you as you will find many of your things destroyed. Such items include candles, shoes, socks, belts, your kids' toys or even the dog dishes. As such, this chewing bad habit can be life threatening for your puppy. So you can either remove such items from your puppy's reach or train it to leave them alone. You can buy dog bones for your puppy to chew on and that can help to minimize the itchiness during teething period.

Being a new dog owner, the above puppy training problems which you might face may seem daunting at first. However, with lots of love and patience you will definitely be able to train your puppy into a well-behaved pet. Nevertheless, it is vital that you prepare yourself well beforehand by learning from the experts who have many years of experience so they will be able to give you lots of advice.
